Description

Salem Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Chapel was built in 1874 and is an eclectic two-storey building with a three-bay front made of snecked masonry, featuring ashlar dressings and rusticated quoins. It has a steeply pitched slate roof.

The central bay is advanced and has an open pediment with an iron finial. There is a hoodmould over a pierced disc at the apex. The gallery features a stepped tripartite window, while the main façade includes round arches with hoodmoulds, colonettes, and foliate capitals. The tall round-arched windows have plate tracery and lead cames, and there is a sill band. A shallow gabled porch has an iron cross finial and an inset tablet that reads "WELSH CALVINISTIC METHODIST 1874." The porch features colonettes on pedestals with foliate capitals and modern plank doors, with steps and iron handrails. Narrow round-arched lancets flank the porch, each with hoodmoulds and brackets at the sill. The flanking bays have two-tier, two-light round-arched windows set within round-arched recesses, topped with plate tracery and an impost band. The roof is hipped with fishscale slate and has a pierced blocking course on corbelled eaves.

The side elevations are rendered and have five windows. The first floor features tall round-arched windows, while the ground floor windows are plain. The Victorian sashes include sidebar glazing. At the rear, a schoolroom and manse adjoin at right angles, with modern fenestration.

The forecourt has a crenellated wall with railings at the embrasures and gatepiers at the centre topped with ornate ironwork finials. Contemporary gates are also present.

Inside, there is a good rectangular galleried space with a raked gallery and a curved panelled front supported by cast iron columns with composite capitals. The organ recess features a classical surround, and there is a panelled great seat and pulpit.
