Description

Capel Newydd is a large chapel dating from the 1840s, with substantial additions made in 1910. It stands with associated forecourt walls and railings.

The original chapel has two storeys with cambered-headed windows below and arched windows above, all with margin-glazed sashes. Window frames feature keystones and mid-way blocks to the jambs, while the upper windows have moulded capitals and moulded arches. The rear elevation has four windows, and the end elevations have two windows each, both featuring an apex keyed roundel.

The original facade, prior to 1910, comprised four long, arch-headed sashes with two Roman Doric, pedimented porches. However, in 1910, a new range was built forward of the old front, and the visible outer angles of the original structure were reclad to match the new work. The 1910 range is an elaborate two-storey elevation with a central open pedimented piece and two-window balustraded wings. The window and door surrounds, cornice, balustrade, angle piers to the wings, and the set-back angles of the original chapel are constructed of bath stone. The centrepiece’s angles have broad rusticated piers to the ground floor and paired Corinthian pilasters above. The centre features two arched ground floor windows, a band, a large first-floor Venetian window with Corinthian pilasters, a moulded arch, a keystone, and an apex keyed oval window. All windows are small-paned. The wings have heavy architraves to the windows, with large keystones extending up into segmental pediments. A sill course is present with brackets supporting the first floor. The ground floor has an outer window and an inner, large open pedimented doorcase on each side, with double doors and a fanlight in an arched surround with a large keystone extending up into the pediment. Corinthian pilasters are set against rusticated stonework. The end walls of the 1910 work have a two-window range, with cambered-headed windows below and arched windows above, also margin-glazed sashes matching the 1840s work, and a balustrade carried around.

The forecourt is enclosed by low stone walls with iron railings and stone gate piers with pyramid caps and matching iron gates. There are two gate piers and two angle piers to Felinfoel Road, with the railings stepping down in two sections towards Capel Newydd Lane. A further set of piers and gates adjoin the chapel. An old photograph indicates the piers and low wall predate 1910, however the piers have been shortened, and new railings, gates and a side wall have been added since.

The interior is square, with a three-sided panelled gallery supported by cast-iron, fluted Ionic columns with scrolled angle brackets and an enriched frieze. There is a panelled 'set fawr' (deacon’s bench) and pulpit, with Corinthian pilasters framing an organ recess. The ceiling is coved, with large plaster roses.
