Description

The Capel Methodistiaid Calfinaidd is a chapel dating from 1905, built in a well-proportioned design. The stonework is rendered and lined out, with raised quoins and pilasters, and is topped by a slate roof. The main front faces west over a forecourt bordered by railings. The building is composed of three bays across two stages, with the central bay slightly recessed behind an arch that rises to a pediment. The central bay has a pair of panelled doors with fanlights, set within a pilastered and architraved doorcase; above are three narrow, margin-glazed windows, similarly framed. The two side bays are identical, with paired windows to both stages. Above the central arch is the inscription “LLITHFAEN M.C. 1905”. The side elevations consist of five bays, with arched windows to the upper stage and square-headed windows below, all with margin glazing and slate sills. A large vestry is set at a right angle to the rear of the chapel, separated by a two-storey service link with a single bay. The vestry is two windows wide and has arch-patterned gables.

The interior, designed to seat approximately 700 people, remains completely unaltered since 1905. A moulded compartmented plaster ceiling features large, bold roundels. The plastered walls are lined and painted to resemble ashlar, with a pine dado. A five-tier gallery of pews is supported by fluted iron columns and brackets. The gallery has a boldly carved and decorated front, extending with curved corners around all four sides, accommodating a male voice choir at the east end and with a dropped gallery directly behind the pulpit for the organ. Three banks of slightly raked pews focus on the panelling-enclosed "set-fawr," which features fully upholstered seating. A raised, carved pine pulpit, decorated with sunflowers, is flanked by carved minister's chairs, each approached by railed steps. The chapel has staging for local eisteddfodau events erected over the “set-fawr.” An entrance lobby runs across the width of the building and includes a stained glass panel depicting the body of the chapel. A clock by Roberts and Owen, Carnarvon, 1905, is also present. The service link to the vestry contains a fireplace, a kitchen, and a deacon's room on the south side. The large vestry, which seats 300, is furnished with reversible benches and has a carved pulpit at the west end and a raised east end.
