Description
Kidwelly Quay consists of a pair of coursed rubble quays that are connected around a small tidal dock, which branches off the eastern side of the Gwendraeth Fach estuary. The larger, rectangular eastern quay is situated at the end of Quay Road, adjacent to a reconstructed canal basin that extends inland. The walls, approximately 5 meters high, have a battered profile that rises from the estuary mud and curves into the dock before returning at nearly straight angles to meet the western quay. This western quay is narrower and has a rounded outer end, with masonry walls extending a short distance into the natural foreshore. The upper 2 meters of both quays have been recently rebuilt with proud pointing and serve as uncapped parapets for the wharfage space on top. The larger quay was previously accessible by railway sidings. There is a set of steps integrated into the upper eastern side of the dock, and a modern ramp provides access down to the river on the western side of the quay.
