Description
The gates, gatepiers, and railings at Parc Howard were constructed in 1912. They feature iron railings set on a stone plinth, with two sets of gates positioned between ashlar gatepiers. The gates are made of wood, showcasing ramped top rails, panelled lower sections, and an open upper section filled with fine cast-iron tracery. The main gates consist of double gates for the carriageway and a single pedestrian gate on the left, while the subsidiary gates towards Parc Howard Avenue have double gates only.
The gatepiers have rock-faced plinths and ashlar shafts that taper inwards at the neck, leading to octagonal heavy caps. These caps are adorned with recessed carved shells on the cardinal faces, and the subsidiary faces are cut back to create a cross shape in plan. The piers are elegantly inscribed with 'Parc Howard' and 'Opened to the Public Sept 21st 1912'. There are three piers for the main gates and two for the other set.
