Description

The Church of St Colman is an 1835-7 Anglican parish church, designed by Daniel Davies of Capel Colman. It was altered in 1895 by Richard Thomas of Cardigan. The church is constructed of rubble stone with dressings of Cilgerran stone and slate, with some rendered areas. It is a small building measuring approximately 40 feet by 22 feet (12.2 x 6.7 m), consisting of a single vessel with a thin west tower and porch. The roof is slate-covered, with steep pyramid caps to finials on the corners of the church, tower, and porch.

The west end features a rendered tower, rectangular in plan, with two plain arched, louvred openings, a moulded stone cornice, and a high battlemented stone parapet with taller corner piers supporting pyramid finials. The tower projects slightly from the nave. The nave has angle piers, finials, and a similar raked crenellation, punctuated by two horizontal slate courses. A stone porch is located on the west side, with a raised surround to a chamfered Tudor arch, raised outer piers with finials on pedestals, edge-on slate raked crenellations up to a central finial on a raised pier. An arched doorway provides access, with a Y-tracery panelled door. The south wall is whitewashed and rendered, with two pointed windows. The east end has similar angle piers, corner, and apex finials, along with raking battlements. A pointed east window is positioned beneath a slate course across the gable and a slate gable roundel. The north side is of rubble stone and incorporates a lean-to vestry/organ chamber and one window, added in 1895.

A timber Y-tracery window with coloured glass was added to the east end in 1895. The stained glass in the east window likely dates from 1895.

The interior features plastered walls and a coved edge to a flat ceiling, with a moulded plaster border along the west side. A medieval font is built into the wall inside the west door. It has a plain round bowl, chamfered below, and a round shaft. An attractive gallery stands on two pine columns with two half-column responds. The gallery front is panelled, featuring three arches: a larger central arch, with seat recesses to the left and right. A panelled door leads from the stair-head into the tower, while plank doors to the left and right provide access to the gallery stairs. Late 19th-century pews, a 20th-century altar, and 1962 panelling are also present, along with a 1909 organ to the north.

Monuments on the north side include a marble memorial to Mary Jones, who died in 1823, featuring a crude palm tree, by Mainwaring of Carmarthen, and a memorial to M.A. Saurin, who died in 1885. On the east wall are a circa 1833 oval plaque commemorating Jacob Jones and family, with an urn, by Mainwaring, and a memorial to the Reverend John Jones of Penylan, Llandygwydd, who died in 1844, by Lewis of Cheltenham.
