Description

No. 43 Dew Street, formerly the Dew Street Infants School, is a former infants school built in the Gothic style using rubble stone with Bath stone dressings. The building features slate roofs and a narrow two-storey front gable facing the street, adorned with a bargeboard and a terracotta fleur-de-lys finial. The first floor has a pointed window with Y-tracery, and below it is a date plaque that reads 'Infants School 1887', situated above a segmental-pointed doorway with a chamfered surround and a boarded door. There are thin segmental-pointed lancet windows on each side of the doorway, and the building stands on a rubble stone plinth. A roof at right angles connects to the end walls of Nos 41 and 45, while behind it rises a slightly taller gable of the main schoolroom, which features a Bath stone bellcote with a single pointed bell opening and a cross-gabled top.

Inside, the entrance porch is open to the roof, leading into a long single-storey former schoolroom that extends back. This room has a high roof supported by five collar trusses with king struts and raking braces. On the northeast wall, there are three large paired casement windows with Tudor-headed glazing, and two similar windows are positioned one above the other in the end wall.
