Description

This former school building, built in a Tudor-Gothic style, dates from 1871. It is constructed of snecked rubble with freestone dressings, topped by a steep slate roof featuring banded fish-scale slates. The roof has coped gables with moulded kneelers. The building has a T-shaped plan, with a main range facing the street and a short, set-back former infants' wing to the right. A spirelet incorporating a vent sits above the junction of the main range and wing, and a stone ridge stack is located further back.

The main range has a doorway in its gable end, which replaced a former mullioned window—the lintel is inscribed "UNDENOMINATIONAL SCHOOL", while a tablet above it reads "NONDENOMINATIONAL SCHOOL”, both dated 1871. Large-pane glazing now fills the doorway, replacing earlier boarded doors. A gabled bellcote at the apex has lost its bell. A gabled porch is located on the right side of the main range, with small side windows and a lintelled boarded door. The infants’ wing has a stack on its left side and paired sash windows with a central mullion. Its gable end features a lintelled vent in the gable and a sash window inserted into a raised original opening.

The left side wall of the main range contains three pairs of sash windows with central mullions, followed by a replaced glazed door, an original horned sash window, and two small inserted windows, plus an inserted basement window. The rear gable end has two inserted boarded doors giving access to the basement. An outshut is located behind the main range, adjacent to the wing with paired sash windows below pivoting lights, all under a small gable. A flat-roofed projection behind the wing obscures an original blocked window.

Internally, partitions have been inserted in both the main range and wing to create a nursery space, and the rear of the main range has been adapted for use as a dwelling.
