Description

The North-west Range at Mostyn Hall Farm is a large-scale farm building dating from the 18th century. It consists of a long range running up-slope, aligned north-east to south-west, with a wide driftway through to an outer yard towards the north-east end. Two parallel gabled wings project from the south-east elevation into the main farmyard, and the building is linked at the south-west end to a former stable range, which forms the south-west boundary of the farmyard.

The building is constructed of rubble stone with slate roofs and coped gables. The south-east elevation, facing the yard, features a high, voussoir-arched driftway on the right-hand side. There are small upper windows and two tiers of vents in the right-hand bay, although the lower wall is concealed by later pigsties. Two advanced wings are positioned above and to the left of the driftway. The coped gables of these wings are topped with ball finials, and the original arrangement of openings is similar in each gable, showing a loose symmetry. Each left-hand gable has a central doorway flanked by windows on the left, while the right-hand gable has a doorway and, above it, a loft doorway and a single window. All openings have voussoir heads, and feature boarded doors on the ground floor and louvred windows in the upper levels. A brick roundel is set in the apex of the left-hand gable. A later lean-to has been added to the lower return of the left-hand wing, and later pigsties adjoin the north-east corner of the main range, consisting of stone walls and lean-to slate roofs enclosing four pens.

The north-west elevation has two large arched entries: one towards the left, serving as the driftway, and another to the right of the centre. Both have rubble voussoirs to relieving arches over timber lintels. There are three tiers of vents in the right-hand section and in the central bay, which also has a loft entry and a blocked doorway with an ashlar voussoir-arched head. A further doorway with a brick-arched head is immediately to the right of the driftway. A single window with ashlar voussoirs and three tiers of vents is in the bay to its left, and a small upper storey window is in the upper gable end, along with vents into the gable apex.

A lower range, set at a right angle to the south-east elevation, links the building with the former stable block. This range, which appears to be slightly later than the main range, has a doorway and a window, both with stone voussoir heads, to the ground floor of the yard elevation. Above, there is a single two-light stone mullioned window. Inserted doors are present in the upper elevation, but an earlier voussoir-headed window with a two-light stone mullioned window above remains to the right of the doorway.

The interior, which was not fully inspected, reveals queen-post and collar trusses. There is some internal subdivision, and partial remains of 19th-century machinery, apparently powered by a water-wheel housed beneath one of the gabled wings.
