Description

This is a terraced house located at 57 Main Street, constructed with painted render and featuring an asbestos slate close-eaved roof without chimneys. The building has two storeys and a cellar. It has a three-window range of 20th-century double-glazed 12-pane sash windows, with a half-glazed house door situated in the left bay. Originally, there was a 19th-century shop front that included pilasters, a fascia, a cornice, and a half-glazed panelled door, along with an iron grille in the stall riser.

At the rear, the roof is also covered with asbestos slates and has a lean-to that mirrors the one on No 59, located to the rear right. There are 20th-century dormer windows present.

Inside, the layout has been altered. The stair hall is to the left, with the staircase positioned against the east wall. The staircase features a Chinese Chippendale balustrade that rises from the back of the hall to the landing, with a similar balustrade continuing to the second flight leading to the upper floor. The balustrade design is similar to that of Nos. 103 and 105, featuring a diagonal cross between upright square balusters, with short lengths in the triangles alternately parallel to one diagonal or the other. The newels are square. The ground floor rear room contains a fireplace with an iron grate. The cellar has a flat ceiling, with bedrock exposed in the northeast corner.
