Description

105 Main Street is a two-bay, three-storey terraced house, likely dating from the 18th century. It is faced in painted stucco, with a slate roof and a rendered stack on the left side. The building is set slightly to the right of the street. The ground floor has a modern shop front and a tall 20th-century door to the extreme right, alongside a 20th-century overlight. Two plate glass sash windows are present on the first floor, while the second floor windows are square in shape with 20th-century glazing. A lower, parallel-roofed rear range extends from the main building.

Inside, a hallway to the right leads to a simple wooden staircase with a distinctive “Chinese Chippendale” design. The balustrade is divided into lozenge panels created by thin square uprights, with diagonally crossing rails bisecting each panel. These panels are then infilled with alternating sets of two parallel bars, producing a broken rhythmic effect. The staircase has a closed string, square newels, and a moulded rail, rising in a dog-leg formation over four flights to the top landing. A fielded panelled shutter was noted on the first floor left-hand window in 1981, but is not currently visible. All visible doors are later 20th-century replacements. It is believed the property includes a basement.
