Description

Marven House is a terraced house dating from the 19th century, featuring painted stucco and a slate roof. It has a rendered stack at the left end and a brick stack at the right end, which is shared with No 74. The house is tall, three storeys high, with a two-window facade that is offset to the right. It has a plain eaves band, a string course with an incised line between the upper floors, and a moulded projecting course beneath the first floor. The upper floors have paired plate-glass sashes beneath a single cambered head, with painted slate sills. The ground floor features a large 2-4-2-pane tripartite sash to the right and a tall narrow doorway also to the right, which has 'Marven House' inscribed in the overlight. Access to the door is via five stone steps leading up to a three-panel door, with the lower panel being fielded.

At the rear, there is an outshut to the left and a gabled addition in the centre. The front of the property has a low retaining wall made of grey limestone rubble, leading to a paved basement. This wall is topped with tooled sandstone coping and features an ornate cast-iron balustrade. The balustrade consists of pierced cast-iron panels supported by bulbous cast-iron standards with pointed finials. The panels display a pattern of concentric circles linked by a diagonal cross, surrounded by vertical and diagonally crossed bars. The gateposts are similar to the standards but have tubular bases, and the gate matches the railings, featuring dog bars beneath the circle.

The interior of Marven House has been significantly altered due to a conversion into flats in the late 20th century, which included the replacement of the staircase. The panelled hall arch is supported on large later 19th-century brackets.
