Description
The farm buildings on the west side of the yard at Pentre Farm date from the 19th century and consist of several phases, likely from the early, mid, and later parts of the century. They are constructed from rubble stone and topped with slate roofs. The west side features three sections that step down the hill, with the lowest range added last and displaying later 19th-century details. This section includes two small zinc-clad gabled dormers, a ground floor window, a door, and a door and window, all framed with cut Cilgerran stone surrounds and triangular heads. There is also a depressed-arched cart entry with a cut-stone head and legged doors. The southeast corner is chamfered, and the south side has a similar window on each floor.
The central range is significantly taller, featuring three tall open arches supported by stone piers with cambered heads and stone voussoirs. There is a loading door at the first floor center, with boarded windows on each side, all also adorned with stone voussoirs. To the extreme right is another loading door. Under the eaves to the center right, there is a large iron wheel intended for belt-driven machinery inside. The rear of this range includes a central loading door, a window on each side, and a gable above for a hoist. The upper range has a slightly higher roof and features a large east side lean-to that is open to the south, possibly for an engine to drive machinery. There is one six-pane window on the east side. Inside the lean-to, a two-storey wall has an upper loading door to the left, and the upper end has a timber-lintel over an opening leading to the barn. There are tall double doors within that have a cambered arch. The interior has an inserted floor, and the deep rear lean-to porch features massive cambered beams over the rear double door. The rear of the barn has a loading door and a vent loop to the left of a projection.
Additionally, there is a long north range that is at right angles to the main building. This single-storey section has one louvred ridge vent and one zinc-clad dormer to the left. It features a continuous slate shelf and paired brick dove holes. The ground floor openings are framed in Cilgerran stone with triangular heads, and the windows have cast-iron glazing bars. There are two windows to the left, followed by an altered opening with the jamb of a former door to the right, then two more windows, a door, and two additional windows, all widely spaced. At the extreme right, there is a 20th-century door opening. The interior is broad with a scissor-rafter roof, and at the upper end, there is a massive pine beam barn wall. The rear has gables at each end, with a roundel above a triangular-headed window.
