Description

The Hotel Mariners is a building which evolved over several centuries, with a core dating back to at least the early 17th century. The prominent, three-storey, five-window front range was constructed in the 18th century, with a central three-bay section projecting forward. The building is faced in painted roughcast, with stucco dressings and a slate roof, punctuated by brick end-wall stacks. Quoins mark the outer angles and the upper floors of the projecting bays. Elaborate moulded string courses are present at both first and second floor sill levels. The ground floor is stuccoed, while the upper floors are roughcast. The windows are hornless sashes with 6-pane glazing in the attic, 12-pane glazing to the first floor, and 16-pane glazing to the ground floor. A doorway with a wide, flush-panelled door is set within an Ionic porch featuring painted stone columns and pilaster responds; it has an entablature with a frieze and modillion cornice, and finely carved capitals and moulded bases with egg-and-dart and bead-and-reel mouldings. The ground floor also incorporates a through-way with a moulded surround, which leads to a timber-framed section with painted brick and a 6-panel door. Above the first-floor windows are stuccoed capitals spelling out "Hotel Mariners", and wreathed plaques displaying "RAC" and "AA". Windowless end walls are visible.

To the left of the main range is a lower, two-storey extension of six bays, stuccoed on the lower part and roughcast above, under a close-eaved slate roof. The right part of this extension has 12-pane hornless sashes above a raised band, and plate glass sashes on the ground floor; a winged wheel plaque displaying "BRTA Approved Hotel" is positioned between the upper windows. The left part features a projecting bay with 19th-century fixed glazing, and displays the words "Hotel Mariners Estd 1625" above the upper windows. The sloping left part has higher-set windows, with plate glass sashes on the first floor, flanking a window with a pair of boarded doors. A ground-floor, flat-roofed projection contains large square 6-pane windows (one renewed in uPVC), flanking what was formerly a doorway, now replaced with a two-light window, and a 4-pane sash in the far right position.

A three-storey rear wing extends to the rear southwest of the main range, constructed in roughcast with a full-height lean-to. Attached to the rear northwest is a late 20th-century addition, matching the front range in appearance, with stucco to the lower part and roughcast above, quoins, and large lettering reading "Hotel Mariners Estd 1625."

A narrow court is enclosed to the rear northwest by a high rubble wall with flat coping, ramped at the ends; a section has been removed to allow a view of the 20th-century rear addition. Both remaining sections of the wall have lean-tos on their inner south side, built of painted rubble stone on the east and lightweight timber frame with painted brick to the west. The ground floor interior has been altered.
