Description

No. 5 Spring Gardens is an end-terrace house dating from the 19th century. It features unpainted stucco with a slate mansard roof that is topped by a battlemented parapet, along with a red brick stack on the right end. The house has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with two bays. The right bay is set in a large square-headed recess that extends from the ground floor sill level upwards. The attic windows are concealed by the parapet. The main windows are small-paned hornless sashes with margin lights and slate sills. There is a narrow sash window on the first floor to the left of an arched doorway, which has the original door made of two heavy panels beneath a radiating-bar fanlight. Above this, a broader sash window is located on the first floor over a very wide tripartite sash. The basement features a cambered-headed 20th-century door with an overlight.

Access to the door is via a renewed flight of eight broad stone steps, which are accompanied by 20th-century metal railings that have replaced the original cast-iron scrolls. To the right of the house, there are original spear-head area railings on low stone coping that curve around to the right corner. The right end wall is roughcast and includes a 12-pane sash window on the ground and first floors, along with a small arched basement window. There is a rear wing to the right that has a door beneath a long arched stairlight to the left and a 12-pane sash window on each floor to the right. A 20th-century porch and door have been added to this wing. The interior has not been inspected.
