Description

Fairwood Lodge is a two-storey stuccoed house built in the Regency style, dating from the 18th century. The main garden front faces south and has eight bays, with two additional bays at the west end that are higher and have a hipped roof with an end stack. The main part of the house has a gabled slate roof, with three rendered ridge stacks and a rendered end stack. The original eight-bay front has the outer three bays on each side brought forward under hipped roofs; the bays set back from the ends are bow-fronted on the west side, with openings set within a round-headed arch. The upper storey has twelve-pane horned sash windows. The lower storey has French doors with margin glazing, except bays three and six, which have sash windows. The two added bays at the west end have similar French doors with overlights in the lower storey. The upper storey has a balcony on iron brackets, with a sash window to the right and a French door to the left. The east end wall has a horned sash window in the upper right corner and a panelled door under a plain overlight in the lower right corner. The west end wall has two cross windows incorporating margin-lit casements. A short entrance front is located at the west end of the north wall. The original front was two bays wide with a hipped roof, corresponding with the three end bays of the garden front. A plain, flat-roofed porch, placed at the west end of the original house, has been retained. It has double panelled doors in a moulded architrave and a round-headed overlight. Above the porch is a round-headed fixed window with a similar architrave, lighting the stair hall. To the left of the porch are segmental-headed sash windows and a low parapet that disguises the change in height with the late 19th-century addition at the west end. The west end has a horned sash window on the upper right side. On the left (east) side of the entrance front is a two-storey gabled projection, part of the service range, with a large sixteen-pane sash window in the lower storey and two smaller sixteen-pane sash windows under segmental heads in the upper storey. Further east is a larger, single-storey service projection with a flat roof, and at the east end, a gabled garage projection with double boarded doors under a three-light casement in the gable. The east side wall of the garage has two sash windows.

The full-height entrance hall has a straight staircase with winders at the bottom, leading to a landing. Both the stair and landing have plain moulded handrails and turned balusters. Doorways leading from the hall have Tuscan pilasters and moulded elliptical arches, incorporated within the late 19th-century addition to the west. Straight ahead, two Tuscan half columns screen a short passage to a French door in the garden front. The interior features late 19th-century plasterwork.
