Description

Bryntysilio is a two-storey house dating from the 18th century. The external walls are finished with scribed stucco. It has a hipped slate roof with wide bracketed eaves, panelled detailing, and tall chimney stacks featuring bracketed cornices and ornate pots; one stack is centrally positioned on the front pitch. A verandah, acting as a balcony to the first floor, extends along the south and west sides, incorporating a wooden balustrade, cast iron columns, and ornamented wooden spandrel brackets. Most windows are casements, with two lights to the main elevations, and the first-floor windows have louvred shutters. The main front faces southwest and has four windows; a modern bay has been added to the ground floor on the left side, with another to the right. The main entrance, originally on the southeast side facing the drive, is now in the second bay and consists of a panelled and part-glazed door with sidelights, set within a frame decorated with a leading staff roll and pilasters with flattened consoles supporting an egg and dart cornice.

The southeast side is a three-bay elevation with a central cross gable above a round-arched sash window; French windows are in the doorway below. A chimney stack rises from the gable apex. The verandah concludes just before the corner. A blocked window is present at the rear, at the southeast end, alongside a four-light small-pane casement window. A staircase projection to the right features a round-arched headed small-pane window. A modern lean-to has been added. A semi-gable steps up beyond, and the cross range projects forward, facing across the rear courtyard; it includes horned Victorian sash windows and a modern extension. The northwest side has a projecting one-window gable end on the left. The first-floor windows here, and on the return facing southwest, both feature ornate, bracketed iron balconies and window box holders with rounded corners. The section of the northwest side set back to the right incorporates a Bath stone splayed bay window to the ground floor with pilasters.

The main southwest entrance door opens onto a hallway which extends back through an arch to a square stair hall. To the right, a round-headed door with a cushioned shield motif above it leads to the dining room, featuring a ceiling with deeply moulded square coffered panels and a running-scroll cornice, along with a fireplace with marble slips and a panelled overmantle. To the left of the hall is the drawing room, which contains an end chimney breast, a fireplace with Delft-type tiles, and a canted bay window overlooking the terraced lawns. The stair hall features flattened architraved arches and a large round-headed window illuminating the staircase, which incorporates stained glass. Dado panelling and a hardwood handrail run along cast-iron balusters that bracket out from the stone steps, while decorative tiles are present on the floor.
