Description
The War Memorial is made of Forest of Dean sandstone and features a tall pedestal with bronze plaques that supports a large seated Welsh dragon in stone. The pedestal has a square shape with rebated and chamfered angles. It includes a deep moulded plinth, with the front displaying a rectangular bronze plaque bordered in laurel. The main section of the pedestal has rebated chamfered angles that are banded with the names of eleven engagements at each corner. The sides are adorned with long rectangular bronze plaques, three of which list the names of the fallen, while the front plaque features finely detailed arms of the county along with an inscription indicating that it is the county memorial. At the top, there is a blocking course with a slightly recessed large pedestal for the sculpture above. Each face of this pedestal has bronze letters on a raised plaque: 'Sacrifice' on the front, 'Courage' and 'Honour' on the sides, and 'Victory' on the rear. The pedestal then chamfers inward to a similarly chamfered base under the dragon. The dragon itself is boldly carved, seated with its wings folded and its tail overlapping the base.
