Description

Blaen Marlais is a building from the early 19th century with origins dating back to the 18th century. It has three storeys and a three-window front, featuring whitewashed roughcast over rubble. The roof is moderately pitched and covered with slate, complemented by plain bargeboards and red brick stacks. The building has symmetric features that are slightly offset to the right.

The first and second floors have 12-pane sash windows with plain reveals and slate sills. The ground floor features slightly larger windows flanking a round arched doorway, which has an arched fanlight with 'Gothic' glazing bars. The door, dating from the later 19th century, is half glazed. A later 19th-century portico with a flat hood is supported by plain Tuscan columns, while modern concrete columns flank the entrance.

At the rear, there is a later 19th-century outshot extension that includes a Gothic-headed 12 small-pane sash stair window. Various later windows have been inserted into the end walls, and there is a fire escape on the left end. A cross range extends to the right rear; it is two storeys high, whitewashed roughcast, with a slate roof and mainly modern fenestration. There is also a two-stage outshot at its rear.

The property features a garden forecourt with a pair of roughcast gatepiers, one of which has a stone pineapple finial that is missing on the left. There are 19th-century ornamental wrought iron gates set in rebates. To the north, there is a former orchard wall, a 10-foot high rubblestone wall.

Inside, the drawing room has a buffet recess and a broad segmental arch with acanthus decoration on reeded pilasters. The room also features an interesting moulded cornice with pellet ornaments and panelled doors.
