Description

Sodstone House is an early 19th-century country house of a T-shaped design. It is a two-storey building with a cellar, originally featuring a three-window front. The upper storey is clad in slate, applied in diminishing courses, while the ground floor is rendered and has a plinth. The roof is hipped and slate-covered, with some modern skylights. Rendered stacks mark the ends of the building.

The first-floor windows are 12-pane sashes with horn detailing, simple reveals, and slate sills. Similar windows, though fixed and with smaller panes, are found on the ground floor, originally flanking the position of the front door. Barred openings allow access to the cellar from the plinth.

The right-hand elevation has slate cladding above modern French windows. A small-paned window and a lean-to have been added to the rear flank. The left-hand elevation is of colourwashed rubble, with a later lean-to on the rear ranges. A double-paned sash window is to the left, and a single, similar window is set within a glazed porch to the right. A gabled extension, potentially dating from the later 19th century, serves as a kitchen and is aligned with the rear range. A small-paned casement window is below the eaves, and a wider 16-pane sash window sits below, featuring plain reveals and brick voussoirs. A blocked doorway is located to the right.

Inside, a four-flight, contemporary dog-leg staircase with turned balusters and a spiral newel rises from the staircase hall. A pair of double doors with a decorative segmental fanlight leads into the principal room at the front, believed to be from the original front entrance.
