Description
Northcliffe House is a shop with flats above, dating from the 18th century and significantly altered in the 20th century. It is constructed of painted stucco, with a hipped slate roof hidden behind a parapet, and two red brick stacks on the right side wall. The four-storey facade has three windows, with plain sill bands and 20th-century four-pane sash windows. A recessed 20th-century shopfront with a door leading to the flats is on the left. Originally, the facade featured cornices with consoles and a pediment over the first-floor centre window. The rear elevation has a three-window range with four-pane sashes and a parapet.
To the right of Northcliffe House is a former Liberal Club, also stuccoed, with a half-timbered gable and a slate roof. This two-storey and attic building has a single window. The attic is half-timbered with a bargeboarded gable, and the apex is jettied out over a small canted oriel. The first floor features a large, square-headed recess with a moulded timber top rail and a row of small panes above, supported by two curved brackets. Inside this recess is a recessed French window with sidelights and small-paned top lights. Narrow single lights with four-pane top lights are located in the wall on either side. The building has channelled angle quoins, and the ground floor features a 20th-century plate glass shop window. The ground floor interior has been altered.
