Description
The Lantern is a house constructed with white-painted stucco and features a gabled roof set back behind a roof terrace and parapet. It stands three storeys tall and has a single window range. Prominently, there is a two-storey timber canted oriel window with 4-12-4-pane glazing and a moulded cornice on the first floor, although the upper floor lacks this cornice. A moulded string course runs at the level of the base of the oriel window. The ground floor showcases an attractive mid-20th century neo-Georgian front with three bays. The central bay features a large 25-pane bowed window, flanked by an arched-headed window and a glazed door, both adorned with radiating glazing bars at the heads and set in square-headed recesses. The right corner of the building is chamfered. On the right side, there is said to be a massive stone arch in the passage between this house and Anchorage.
The Lantern is believed to have medieval origins, and on the ground floor, there are two blocked full-height doorways on the west wall that were exposed during building work in 2001.
