Description

The Sluice, which includes The Hard and The Mayor's Slip, is a stone-lined enclosed tidal basin dating from an unspecified period. It features a curving plan with a rounded west end. The structure is built of rubble masonry that appears to have been constructed in several phases and has undergone significant repairs. The copings are made of rough stone. On the north side, the quay has a rubble-stone parapet topped with rough stone coping. A cannon that was used as a bollard and listed in 1977 was not observed during the inspection. At the eastern end, there are three blocked broad arches beneath the former warehouse known as Sleeman's Stores, which is listed separately.
