Description
No. 1 Cathedral Villas is a mid to late 19th century row of three large villas that were originally stuccoed and painted, although No. 9 now has exposed stone. The villas feature gable fronts, slate roofs, and four Caerbwdy stone chimney stacks. Each house is two storeys with an attic, presenting a two-window arrangement on the main floors and a single central attic window. They have large sash windows with unusual marginal glazing bars and slate sills. The front doors are four-panelled with large traceried overlights. No. 9 has its door in the right bay, while Nos. 11 and 13 are a mirrored pair with doors in the inner bays. Nos. 11 and 13 have plain bargeboards, while No. 9 has a renewed fretted bargeboard. The south wall of No. 9 is rendered, and the north end rear walls are stone.
No. 9 features an exposed stone front with Caerbwdy stone cut voussoirs above the windows, replacing the original brick, and has a modern attic window with a similar glazing bar pattern made of plastic. Nos. 11 and 13 remain stuccoed, with No. 11 showcasing raised gabled surrounds at the ground floor openings, similar to No. 7, while No. 13 has keyblocks above all its windows. No. 11 has lost its traceried overlight. The rear elevations are made of rubble stone and rise four storeys, with brick window heads and two-storey stuccoed additions.
The front of the villas is bordered by low ornate cast iron railings, similar to those at No. 7, complete with matching gates.
