Description
No. 3 Cathedral Villas is a row of three large villas dating from the mid to later 19th century. Originally all stuccoed and painted, the stone is now exposed on No. 9. The villas have gabled fronts with slate roofs and four Caerbwdy stone stacks. Each villa is two storeys and has an attic, with a two-window arrangement to the main floors and a single central attic window. The windows are large sashes with unusual marginal glazing bars and slate sills. They have four-panelled doors with large traceried overlights; No. 9’s door is in the right bay, while Nos. 11 and 13 have doors in the inner bays, mirroring each other. No. 11 and 13 have plain bargeboards, while No. 9 has a renewed, fretted bargeboard. The south wall is rendered, while the north end has stone rear walls.
No. 9 has an exposed stone front, with Caerbwdy stone cut voussoirs to its windows, replacing original brickwork. It also features a modern attic window with a plastic frame imitating the glazing bar pattern. Nos. 11 and 13 are stuccoed; No. 11 has raised gabled surrounds to the ground floor openings, similar to No. 7, and No. 13 has keyblocks over all windows. No. 11 has lost its original traceried overlight. The rear elevations are of rubble stone, four stories high, with brick window heads, and have two-storey stuccoed additions.
The front has rubble walls with low ornate cast iron railings, similar to No. 7, and matching gates.
