Description
The Church of St Julian is a Grade II listed building constructed from grey limestone rubble with Bath stone dressings and a slate roof. This small single chamber church is designed in the lancet Gothic style and features hoodmoulded single lancet windows, most of which have iron lattice glazing, except for those that have been replaced with stained glass. The west front has a coped gable topped with a cross finial, and there are windows on either side of the pointed door, which also has a hoodmould. The entrance is fitted with double board doors, and there is a small rectangular louvred vent in the gable.
On the north side facing the harbour, there are four windows, three of which contain stained glass. The rear east end is rendered and has no windows. The south side, which is below the roadway, features two lancet windows. Inside, the exposed rubble stone walls and boarded three-sided roof are notable. The stained glass windows include one from 1881 by Bell of Bristol, depicting Christ walking on the water, dedicated to J and T Lilycrop and J Child, who all drowned in 1881. Another window, also by Bell, shows the Lord in Glory and was dedicated to Ann Milward in 1900, while a third window dedicated to Miss E Millward was installed in 1923.
