Description

Gwynne House is a house from the 19th century, part of a symmetrical pair with Kemendine. It features painted stucco that resembles ashlar, a parapet, and a hipped slate roof with brick stacks on either side. The building has three storeys and a basement, with a double-fronted design and paired central doors. The first and second floors have 16-pane sash windows, while the first-floor windows are adorned with early 19th-century Gothic iron guards. On the ground floor, there are narrower 12-pane sash windows flanking the paired doorways, which are accessed by a single flight of slate steps. The entrance is highlighted by a pedimented double doorcase supported by three thin columns, with fielded panelled reveals and doors, and semi-circular fanlights featuring fine metal tracery. The basement has sash windows, with 4-pane windows on Kemendine and 12-pane windows on Gwynne House. The area railings from the 19th century are made of wrought iron with scrolls and standards topped with lotus-and-ball finials.

Inside, the narrow layout includes a hall passage along the party wall leading to a staircase at right angles. The doorcases are decorated with early 19th-century reeded mouldings and square paterae at the corners, featuring 6-panel doors. The fine open well stair has stick balusters, turned newels, and a thin rail, arranged in six flights. The front room contains an elliptical-arched sideboard recess in the rear wall, a moulded plaster cornice with a Georgian leaf design, and a ceiling border with a floral design.
