Description

The Forge is a former perfumery and forge, constructed with white-painted roughcast and Bridgwater-tile roofs. It has a T-plan layout and stands one-and-a-half storeys tall. The north-south range on the left features a gable end at the front, with roof tiles finished flush against the wall. The upper floor has a triple-casement window, while the arched opening below contains a half-glazed door flanked by lead-paned sidelights, which are positioned higher than the springing of the arch. This opening also includes a transom and a three-light fan, with the centre light capable of tilting.

To the right, there is a square tower at the angle that has a continuous wall face. The ground floor includes an arched window on the left and a small square-headed window on the right, which appears to be a later addition. The first floor features a small pointed light in the centre and a plain parapet that rises well above the eaves level. The east side of the parapet slopes back towards the former forge wing, where there is a door to the right in the angle, likely a later insertion.

The forge wing has a door with sidelights set in a blocked broad arch, which was originally an open cart entry. The east end wall is supported by plain roughcast raking buttresses on either side, and the overhanging verges are notable. The ground floor has a pair of casement windows, while the first floor features a leaded triple casement. There is also a lean-to two-storey range at the rear, probably added later, which includes garage doors on the west side and two leaded single lights with drip courses on the south side of the ground floor, along with a single leaded light above in the centre.

At the rear of the north-south range, there is an end-wall brick stack and outside steps leading up to a former loft door. Attached to the steps is a rendered cylindrical tower that has an arched door on the east side, a small leaded light to the right set higher, and tiny leaded lights on the front just above mid-height and beneath a water tank. There is a raised band just below the tank, which was originally rendered rubble stone, though the rendering has spalled. The tower also features a plain parapet and another arched door at the rear. The building has not been inspected.
