Description

Mount Hazel is a villa dating from the 18th century, constructed of coursed rubble stone with a deep-eaved slate roof and a stone stack on the left end; the right-hand stack is missing. Bracketed eaves are a prominent feature. The building is two storeys high and features a three-window front. Large, 12-pane hornless sash windows are set within stone voussoirs, slate sills, and stone hoodmoulds (covering the lower two windows on each side). A recessed central door is framed by an ornate wooden doorcase. The door itself is a four-panel design with arched top panels and a large overlight containing coloured glass margins. A panelled reveal, soffit, and front panel extend beneath a canopy. The doorcase features three panels on each pier, stucco brackets, and a flat, painted stone top with moulded edges, set above a large slate slab threshold. The end walls have deep verges with paired brackets. The east end exhibits a similar 12-pane sash window with hoodmould on each floor to the right. The west end has 20th-century rendering above ground floor level, alongside a small stone outbuilding with a lean-to porch addition to the left and a small window to the right, both with stone voussoirs. Other 20th-century window and porch openings are present. A corniced stone chimney stands on the right end. A 12-pane sash window sits to the right of the centre on the first floor; an attic window is a probable 20th-century replacement. The rear elevation incorporates four-pane horned sash windows, a small added conservatory in front of the door, and three renewed first-floor 12-pane windows—all with stone voussoirs and slate sills. Internally, the entrance hall features a hall arch, and the principal rooms on each side are fitted with panelled shutters.
