Description

Kraxi is a three-storey building with varied stucco elevations, featuring a four-plus-two-window arrangement facing Portland Street and a four-window layout on Terrace Road. It has cill bands and vermiculated quoins at the corners and ends of the Terrace Road front. The building is topped with slate roofs, cement render chimney stacks, and wide bracket eaves, and it includes horned sash glazing. A gable end at the corner of Terrace Road showcases applied timberwork.

The Portland Street front has a symmetrical plan, with two-storey splayed bays on the upper floors flanking central windows that have architraves. The broad entrance is adorned with fluted pilasters and a cast-iron parapet featuring lettering. Of particular interest is the Rea’s bar and lounge, which has a glazed tile bay front. The entablature above the rounded window features Art Nouveau lettering and designs, with frosted glass (recently replaced) and stained glass spandrels. A vine-decorated panel is to the left, with a white horse depicted to the right, and garlanded panels on the stallriser.

The contemporary shop front wraps around the corner along the full length of the Terrace Road front, featuring paired shop windows with an additional window in between. The entrances are splayed and include ‘tessellated doormats’, tiled stallrisers, and ventilators. Above, the windows are framed with architraves and keystones, and there is a stepped cill band on the second floor along with two oriel windows on the first floor.
