Description
48 Terrace Road is a three-storey building featuring varied stucco elevations. The facade has a four-plus-two window arrangement facing Portland Street and a four-window layout on Terrace Road. It includes cill bands and vermiculated quoins at the corner and end of the Terrace Road front. The building is topped with slate roofs, cement render chimney stacks, and wide bracket eaves, and it has horned sash glazing.
At the corner on Terrace Road, there is a gable end with applied timberwork. The Portland Street front has a symmetrical plan, with two-storey splayed bays on the upper floors flanking central windows that have architraves. The broad entrance is accentuated by fluted pilasters and a cast-iron parapet with lettering.
The most notable feature of the building is the Rea’s bar and lounge, which has a glazed tile bay front. This area includes Art Nouveau lettering on the entablature above a rounded window with frosted glass and Art Nouveau designs (recently replaced), stained glass spandrels, a vine-decorated panel on the left, and a white horse on the right, along with garlanded panels on the stallriser.
A contemporary shop front wraps around the corner, extending the full length of the Terrace Road front. It features paired shop windows with an additional window in between, splayed entrances with tessellated doormats, tiled stallrisers, and ventilators. The upper windows are adorned with architraves and keystones, a stepped second-floor cill band, and two first-floor oriels.
