Description

The White Horse Hotel is a three-storey building featuring varied stucco elevations. It has a four-plus-two window arrangement facing Portland Street and a four-window layout on Terrace Road. The design includes cill bands and vermiculated quoins at the corners and ends of the Terrace Road front. The roof is slate, with cement render chimney stacks and wide applied timberwork.

The Portland Street front has a symmetrical plan, characterized by two-storey splayed bays on the upper floors flanking central windows that have architraves. The broad entrance is marked by fluted pilasters and a cast-iron parapet with lettering.

To the left of the entrance is the main highlight of the building, Rea's Bar and lounge, which features a glazed tile bay front. The entablature above the rounded windows displays Art Nouveau lettering, with frosted glass and Art Nouveau designs that have been recently replaced. There are stained glass spandrels, a vine-decorated panel to the left, and a panel reading "White Horse" to the right, along with garlanded panels on the stall riser.

Previously, there was a similar rounded window on the corner beneath a timber shield inscribed with "Rea's." A contemporary shop front wraps around the corner along the full length of the Terrace Road front, featuring paired shop windows with an additional window in between, splayed entrances with tessellated doormats, tiled stall risers, and ventilators. The upper windows are adorned with architraves and keystones, a stepped second-floor cill band, and two first-floor oriels.
