Description

5 Portland Street is a late Georgian building with later alterations. It is three storeys and has a basement, with a two-window facade finished in rendered render. The building has moulded quoins at the ends and centre, and a rusticated ground floor with a band below the first-floor windows. The roof is slate, hipped at the right end, with bracketed eaves and ridge tiling, and a red brick chimney stack. The windows are small-paned sashes, some of which have been replaced. The bays to the left of each front have wide cornices and faceted aprons. The first-floor windows on the right have ornate (Jacobean) architraves, contrasting with the simpler classical doorcases which include pilasters. A modern door serves No. 5. Railed basement wells are present, and ornate barley twist banisters are a feature of No. 7.
