Description

The Rhydfendigaid Calvinistic Methodist Chapel, dating from the late 19th century, is constructed of rubble stone with a slate roof and deep, bracketed eaves. The gabled front features three tall, round-headed recesses with cut sandstone voussoirs. The outer recesses frame long, round-headed windows with similar stone voussoirs below the arch, while the central recess is slightly wider and frames a short, arched window and a round-headed doorway, wider than the window. The windows contain renewed wooden glazing with small panes and radiating bars. The double doors are wooden, panelled and feature a large fanlight divided by vertical bars, leading to slate steps. A plaque in the gable proclaims "Addoldy Trefnyddion Calfinaidd aideladwyd yn y flwyddyn 1859". Long quoins are visible on the exterior. The sides of the chapel have three similar long, round-arched windows with stone voussoirs, but without arched recesses. One end wall is rendered and contains two arched windows with 1907 glazing bars, bearing the inscription "HW 1907".

The interior, largely dating from the late 19th century, features a lobby with elaborate encaustic tiles, centred around a 16-tile IHS design. A pitch pine gallery is accessed by stairs with turned balusters and newels with ball finials. The chapel floor has two pairs of 5-panel doors flanking a large triple sash window with coloured leaded glass and marginal glazing bars. The broad interior has a plastered ceiling divided into squares and rectangles by plaster ribs with roundels at the intersections and centre. Pitch-pine pews are arranged in three blocks, with the outer ones canted inward and two inward-facing blocks on each side of the pulpit and great seat. A large U-plan gallery features a pitch-pine front in long sections, divided by fluted pilasters, each section with a roundel flanked by long panels. A modillion cornice sits below, and there are eight cast-iron columns with scrolled leaf capitals, with figured wood in the panels and roundels. The great seat has curved angles, turned balusters around the back, and panelled newels with finials. The pulpit platform is large, with steps up from each side, ramped rails, turned balusters, and newels with finials. The platform features panelled angle piers and a balustraded section each side of the pulpit-front, which has two arched panels with pilasters and carved capitals, bearing finely carved neo-classical relief decoration, likely dating to around 1907, matching the exterior pilasters and book-rest brackets.

A roundel on the rear wall between the arched windows features a 1907 mosaic depicting a dove and a bible, alongside an inscription. Below the mosaic is a large inscription panel reading “Addoldy y Trefnyddion Calfinaidd Goleuni y bywyd. Adeiladwyd yr addoldy hon yn y flwyddyn 1859 pryd y bu ychwanegiad mawr at rif yr Eglwys oedd eisioes wedi ei sefydlu yn y flwyddyn 1794. Atgywairiwyd yn y flwyddyn 1907 harddaf hefyd le fy nrhaed.” The arched windows each side have 1907 roundels of patterned glass in an Art Nouveau style. Memorial plaques commemorate Rev. D. Morgan, who died in 1863 and was minister during the rebuilding, and Rev. J. Bowen, who died in 1913. A bronze relief portrait by Gilbert Bayes, a noted London sculptor, commemorates Catherine James of Pantyfedwen, who died in 1939.
