Description

The Post Office is a house and shop built of rubble stone, featuring a slate roof with deep eaves supported by paired brackets and end stacks made of squared stone with stepped caps. The building is two storeys high with an attic, and the front range consists of coursed squared long blocks of stone. It originally had four large 12-pane sash windows, which have since been replaced with uPVC. There are four windows on the first floor and one window on the ground floor to the left, all featuring stone voussoirs and slate sills. The front door, located in the second bay, is a six-panel door with two circular panels and two arched panels, topped with a large overlight that has marginal glazing bars. A timber Roman Doric porch with two columns and a corniced top enhances the entrance.

The right two bays contain a double shop front with a recessed central entry featuring narrow half-glazed double doors and a large overlight with marginal glazing bars above. The shop windows on either side have two long panes facing the front and one canted pane leading into the doorway. The outer pilasters are made of timber, and there is an overall fascia and cornice.

On the north end wall, there is one ground floor window on the right and one above it on the first floor, both with stone voussoirs, as well as two very small attic windows with stone lintels. All windows have been replaced with uPVC and have slate sills. The gable verges overhang, and the rear features a new dormer window.

Inside the shop, the layout appears largely unchanged, with dark stained wood shop shelves and a counter, likely from the late 19th century. An arch over the doorway to the rear has fretwork spandrels, and there are two iron columns in the shop window.
