Description
Pont Glanbran is a mid-19th century road bridge that spans the Afon Bran. It is one of three notable masonry bridges leading to Pontrhydsaeson, attributed to either Thomas Penson or his son R.K. Penson, with the others being Pont Dyffryn built in 1847 and Pont Rhydsaeson.
The bridge features squared tooled sandstone and has a single broad elliptical arch. It is characterized by raised rectangular voussoirs that have smooth borders, along with large keystones on either side. Above the arch, there is a rock-faced raised band and a parapet topped with heavy squared coping stones. The ends of the bridge curve slightly outward to raised end piers, with a band that extends across.
Pont Glanbran is included in a distinctive group of masonry bridges of exceptional quality in the area, designed by Thomas or R.K. Penson, which also encompasses Pont Aberarth from 1849 and Pont Pennant from 1850.
