Description
Pont Aberarth is a broad single-arched bridge built in 1849, likely designed by Thomas Penson of Oswestry or his son R.K. Penson. The previous bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1846. In that year, Mr. Penson estimated the costs for two design schemes, though it is unclear which one was ultimately used. In 1851, during a payment dispute, the builder David Morris claimed that R.K. Penson's requirements led to increased costs. David Howells served as the clerk-of-works.
The bridge is constructed from tooled squared dark-grey stone, featuring a prominent arch with raised rusticated rock-faced voussoirs and a keystone. There is a slightly cambered band under the parapet, which has raised angle piers and flat coping. A datestone from 1849 is located on the south side. The listing also includes the high rubble stone revetment wall that runs southeast to Bryndewi from the west end, the sloping abutment running north from the west end, and a short section running north from the east end, which has a brick arch for the leat overflow from Y Glyn Factory. A date of 1912 on this section may indicate repairs.
This well-designed cut-stone bridge is notable for its unusual scale and quality. It is one of a small number of high-quality bridges designed by the Pensons in the parish, including Pont Dyffryn by T. Penson from 1847, Pont Pennant by R.K. Penson from 1850, Pont Rhydsaeson, and Pont Glanbran.
