Description
Y Glyn Factory is a former woollen mill built in 1865 by John Phillips of Lanlas, who also operated Aberarth Mill. The land was owned by the Hon. G. Edwardes as part of the Neuadd, Oakford estate. The mill was run by Rowland Pugh from 1866 until around 1957.
The factory is constructed of whitewashed rubble stone and features a hipped slate roof. It has a square plan with a single-storey front that includes a door, a ground-level square opening, and two additional doors. An outbuilding is attached to the right corner, which has a gable at a right angle and contains one door. The side of the building has a first-floor 12-pane sash window. The rear wall is two-storey, featuring a loft door situated above a window-door-window arrangement, with a rounded corner on the right. Set back to the right is the south side of the main building, which is also two-storey and has two loft lights above two windows and a broad central door. There is a long rectangular opening to the right and a lean-to structure beyond it, which includes a door. The rear of the building is positioned over a steep bank adjacent to a minor stream.
To the northeast, there is a single-storey outbuilding that features a breast-shot water-wheel on its west side. The mill was powered by water from the Arth, which was directed through a leat and a concrete channel over the stream gully.
Y Glyn Factory is recognized as a relatively early purpose-built woollen mill that retains its regional character.
