Description
Pont Dyffryn is a road bridge built in 1847 by Thomas Penson. It is one of three distinctive masonry bridges leading to Pontrhydsaeson, alongside Pont Rhydsaeson and Pont Glanbran.
The bridge features squared rubble stone and has a single elliptical arch with a shallow profile. The arch is accentuated by raised rectangular voussoirs and a large raised keystone. Above the keystone, there is a flat raised band that runs beneath a flat parapet, which is topped with heavy squared coping stones. The ends of the bridge curve slightly outward to raised piers, with a band carried across them.
Pont Dyffryn is recognized as part of a unique group of high-quality masonry bridges designed by Thomas Penson and his son R.K. Penson. This group includes other notable bridges such as Pont Aberarth from 1849 and Pont Pennant from 1850. The bridge has a span of 32 feet and was rebuilt according to the plans of Thomas Penson, with David Morgan of Cardigan as the builder.
