Description
The Pier and Pavilion is a structure built on a 14-day substructure with cast-iron piles made at Greens Foundry. It features a narrow pier at the seaward end and boarded sides on the pavilion. The landward end has an aisle with pointed clerestory windows and leaded roofs, along with a tunnel vaulted high roof that includes a plinth ridge and cresting. The building is two stories tall at the northwest end, also with a tunnel roof. The southwest side has small-pane sash windows, several of which are blocked, and there are similar tripartite windows on the northeast side. Access to the pavilion is from the promenade through a gated forecourt, although there have been commercialized alterations to the front. A triple arched entrance leads to an amusement arcade below a large petal pattern fanlight that illuminates the pavilion hall. The interior retains cast-iron arcades, foliated capitals, and transverse and longitudinal lattice work girders.
