Description
Admiral Rodney's Pillar is a Grade II* listed monument made of Breidden dolerite. It features a plinth raised over two steps, topped with an unmoulded cornice that supports a Doric style column with entasis, a capital, and an abacus. This is surmounted by a drum and a finial, which replaced the original gilded ball after it was struck by lightning in 1847. A granite panel on the west face commemorates the naval achievements of Sir George Brydges Rodney, Admiral of the White, particularly his victory over the French at the Battle of the Saints off Dominica in 1782. The pillar has undergone repairs in 1847, 1896, and between 1983 and 1984. An inscription in Welsh, recorded by Rev Roberts of Criggion, had disappeared by 1890. To the northeast, there is a triangulation pillar with the bench mark S4796.
