Description

Court Farmhouse is a farmhouse, dating from the 17th century, with later additions and alterations. It is built of coursed rubble blocks, rendered on the front and right-hand side, with a low-pitched, hipped slate roof and wide eaves. There are two brick end stacks, and a brick stack to the kitchen wing. The front has three windows, displaying a tall double cross design with chamfered members, and smaller attic casements in a similar style. The front door is six-panelled, with raised and fielded panels, and is covered by a gabled canopy with timber framing and a slate roof, set on curved brackets.

The building survives largely as originally constructed, with some replacement of fireplaces. Inside, there are two main rooms and a wide staircase hall with square-panel infill beneath the stairs and steps leading down to the cellar. The staircase rises from a curtail step, featuring a scrolled newel and an open string with carved brackets. The main rooms have six-panel doors, panelled window reveals, and moulded chair rails. One room has arch-headed alcove cupboards that are panelled. Smaller rooms have heavy plank doors with massive strap hinges set on gudgeon pins. A dairy is located in the right-hand rear wing, featuring massive slate slabs and ceiling-hung plank shelves. The kitchen, in the left-hand wing, has a large fireplace, massive meat hooks, and a bacon rack.

Original wooden flooring is present in the front rooms, with decorative square tiles in the hall, plain tiles in the dairy, and stone slabs in the kitchen. On the first floor, arched corridor openings are framed by a moulded architrave with imposts and a keystone.
