Description

Bishop's Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 16th century with 19th-century additions and 20th-century alterations. It is built of rubble with brick and rubble stacks to the right and center, topped with a pantiled roof. The building has an L-plan layout that includes a rear dairy wing and a through passage. It stands two storeys high and features three windows, all of which are timber casements under original timber lintels. The southwest side has original timber ovolo mullioned windows with stone slate weathered cills and 20th-century leaded diamond lights, along with a small recess beneath the ground floor dairy window. The rear of the house has four windows, including those on the ground and first floors in the second bay from the right. There are two small square windows that light the stairwell, with the lower one set in a moulded frame and the upper one lacking glass, both featuring single mullions. The first floor on the right has a larger square window in a bolection moulded wooden frame, while the ground floor has a two-light casement with an ovolo mullion and timber lintel. A 17th-century door leads to the dairy, complete with strap hinges and a timber lintel, and there are wooden ovolo mullioned windows. A 19th-century single-storey extension and a well are located in the courtyard.

Inside, the kitchen features an oak bressumer over a fireplace that is about six meters long, a bread oven with a 19th-century cast iron door, and deep chamfers on the beams. There are fine chestnut panelled screens along the through passage and between the two front rooms, as well as a stone fireplace in the center front room. A newel stair with solid oak treads rises to the attic level from the rear of the through passage, featuring a four-centred arched studded door with decorative strap hinges at the first floor level. The small rear windows have chamfered mullions with run-out stops, and the roof is a six-bay structure with tie-beam and collar trusses.
