Description
The mausoleum for the Watkins family of Penoyre is a plain rectangular structure made of rubble stone, featuring long side walls that are windowless. The roof is not visible due to overgrowth. At the east end, there is a large ashlar lintel above an iron-barred opening, which is inscribed in memory of Julia Watkins, who died in 1818. The inscription reads, "Revere the holy ground on which you tread/ this vault that rises oer my Julia's head .... Th Watkins Pennoyre 1818." The west end has a boarded door with an ashlar lintel inscribed with the words "We died to live forever," along with a rectangular opening that has an iron grille over it. The mausoleum is enclosed by rubble walls, which include a low doorway on the west side. Inside, the structure features a brick vaulted ceiling and iron coffin shelves along the sides.
