Description
The Old Rectory is a former rectory dating from the 18th century, constructed of rubble stone with steep purple slate roofs, which are banded in blue slate. It is built in a Domestic Gothic style, and is a two-storey and attic building with a T-plan layout, including a porch in the northeast angle and a broad, two-storey service range that lean-tos onto the west side.
The building features massive chimneys with sloped sides and a string course under the short tops. Two are visible on the west side, at the joint with the lean-to roof, and one is now roughcast on the south wall face.
The north side has a large gable to the right and a lean-to porch against the east side, positioned in the angle with the windowless north side of the east gable. The gable contains two-light windows with small panes, flush to the wall face and without sills. These windows have chamfered and stopped mullions and jambs, which are shorter in the attic, and are topped with cement hoodmoulds. Pointed relieving arches are above the lower windows. The porch has a single casement window on each floor, facing north, and a doorway to the east with a pointed relieving arch over a panelled door, which has a massive stone lintel.
The east gable end has similar flush mullion windows, all with stone relieving arches; two-light windows to the upper floors and three-light to the ground floor.
The south side has a single light to the right of a flat-roofed, 20th-century addition. A large roughcast chimney-stack is located on the original wall face behind the addition. The south gable to the left features stone hoodmoulds over purple sandstone lintels and pointed relieving arches to all openings. There are six-pane sash windows on each upper floor, and a 20th-century French window paired with an original long two-light window with small panes.
The west side has two stone stacks on the side of the main roof and the lean-to, which has close-eaves and a roughcast chimney at the right corner. A single first floor casement is located to the left, with a very small casement pair to the left of centre on the first floor. The ground floor has three casements with timber lintels; the left one is shorter, and the right one has a pointed relieving arch. The north end has a single light on each floor, the lower one with a pointed relieving arch. The south end has a single light above a French window.
A single-storey scullery range runs west from the south end, with a door and window, and two doors. The coach-house and stable range has a large, cambered arched coach-entry at the north end, featuring stone voussoirs, above which are large double loft doors with a pointed relieving arch. Tooled angle quoins are present. The east side includes a casement pair to the right and a door and window to the left (formerly a stable). A Gothic arched window is located in the south end wall, with stone voussoirs. The south side of the low scullery range has a door to the left.
The north porch enters via a pointed arch into a narrow hall with a staircase to the south. The dog-leg staircase has chamfered and stopped newels and balusters, as well as a closed string. A large room to the east has a modern fireplace. To the west, a passage leads to a south drawing room, which has an ashlar Caernarvon-arched fireplace, chamfered with bar stops, and a shelf over. A moulded cornice is also present. Four-panel doors are set in raised, chamfered, and stopped surrounds. North of the passage is a former study with panelled shutters. The passage runs west to a northwest service stair and a southwest kitchen. The first floor provides bedrooms and nurseries, with a service stair leading up to attic rooms containing narrow fireplaces.
