Description

Dolgar is a 3-unit, lobby entry-type house dating from the 17th century, featuring one storey and an attic. It has a timber frame on a masonry plinth, topped with an asbestos tile roof, and a timber-clad west gable end. A red brick central stack is present. The well-preserved square-panelled box framing consists of three panels high, incorporating a mix of plaster, brick nogging, and original wattle and daub. There is a diagonal brace in the panel above the front (south) door, mirrored on the north side of the house. The panels in the east bay are slightly narrower than those elsewhere. The east gable end displays a queen post truss. A modern front door is set in an earlier opening and backs onto the stack, while a modern rear door has been added to the east gable end, positioned under a substantial mid rail and next to a window. Three small windows on the ground floor (north and south) have likely been renewed in earlier openings. Gable dormers have been added in the attic, with one on the north side of the west bay and another on the south side of the central bay. The east bay of the attic is illuminated by a window in the gable end.

Inside, the timber framing is also well preserved. There is a box-framed partition (without panel infill) between the central and west bays, featuring two original openings with cusped lintels, indicating the presence of two former inner rooms. The central bay, serving as the hall, has a substantial spine beam with stop-chamfered edges and chamfered subsidiary beams. Fireplaces are located on each side of the chimney; the fireplace lintel in the hall is not original, but the stairs remain in their original position to the north of the stack. The kitchen, which was formerly the parlour, retains its original fireplace lintel and includes a bread oven on its north side. Upstairs, the original trusses are well preserved, with one purlin and a steep pitch. Carpenter's marks, including scratch and circle assembly marks, can be found throughout, particularly in the attic of the east bay.
