Description
The entrance gate, flanking walls, and railings adjoining the First Lodge to Llanerchydol Hall were built around the same time as the lodge, likely during the remodelling of Llanerchydol Hall in 1820. The architects are believed to be the Reptons, who also designed the lodge, gates, and railings. In the late 20th century, around 1980-1990, the layout of the railings was altered as part of a road scheme, which shortened the forecourt of the lodge.
The railings run parallel to Llanerchydol Lodge, with the gate positioned across the former drive, aligned with the lower corner of the lodge. Additional lengths of railing extend from the front elevation of the lodge and return to enclose a small forecourt in front of its gable end. The cast-iron railings feature trefoiled heads and are supported by stone plinth walls between octagonal piers topped with raked copings. Heavier piers flank the gate, which is made of timber and has triangular braces that create geometric tracery between each post. The top rail of the gate retains remnants of iron cresting.
Together, the railings, walls, and gates are an important part of the group with Llanerchydol Lodge and contribute to the historical and architectural context of Llanerchydol Hall, exemplifying the Picturesque Gothic style.
