Description
The Gate House, built around 1820, is almost certainly a former toll house for the Turnpike Road to Dolgellau. The exterior features rough random local rubble, with a roof that has been renewed using concrete tiles and a ribbed brick stack at the rear. This two-storey building has an L-shaped plan, with a gabled wing that extends towards the road. The entrance is located in an added porch at the angle between this wing and the range that runs at right angles to it. The wing includes a canted bay window on the ground floor and a two-light casement window above, which has a four-centred arched head set within a chamfered architrave. Similar windows are found in the gable end of the other range. All windows are adorned with ornamental cast-iron diamond lattice glazing. The Gate House is listed as a good example of an early 19th-century toll house, retaining much of its original picturesque design elements.
