Description

Black House Farmhouse is a 17th-century building that was rebuilt from an earlier cruck house. It has one-and-a-half storeys and is constructed of rubble stone from different phases, topped with a slate roof. The farmhouse features a ridge stack located to the right of the center and a large projecting rubble stack on the southeast gable. There is a central enclosed porch made of rubble and slate. The windows are a mix of 19th and 20th-century casements, while the door frame dates back to the 17th century and includes ovolo and ogee mouldings, leading to a modern glazed door.

Inside, the layout consists of a former hall and inner room, which now functions as a single room at the west end, a wide entrance passage, and a large parlour at the east end. On the west side of the passage, one blade and tie beam of an original cruck truss remains, with the tie beam shaped to create a segmental arched door head. Adjacent to this doorway is a large inserted stack from around 1600. The passage features ogee-moulded beams and stone stairs that ascend towards the front wall. A post and panel screen with ovolo mouldings and a doorway with a moulded frame and cranked head separates the later 17th-century parlour. This parlour includes ovolo-moulded beams, a window lintel, and a re-set ogee-moulded fireplace lintel. On the first floor, the central partition truss displays exposed square-panel infill framing, which incorporates a doorway with an ornate head. The east end truss has its tie-beam cut to form a Tudor arch above a small fireplace, which has been infilled with a later hob grate.
