Description
Hermon Congregational Chapel is located on the north side of the Newchurch to Painscastle road in Rhosgoch village. Built in 1839, the chapel features painted rubble stone with iron sheeting at the west end and a slate roof adorned with ridge cresting. It has a gabled porch at the southeast corner and a rear schoolroom with a lean-to roof. The porch door is boarded and topped with a fan light, while there is a blocked door to the southwest. The tall multi-pane windows have round heads, with only the east window retaining its original glazing and fan head.
Inside, the chapel was originally designed as a long wall chapel but was refitted in the later 19th century, with the pulpit now positioned on the end wall. It features two crown post trusses that rise through a boarded ceiling, a match-boarded dado, and double panelled doors leading to the porch and schoolroom.
The chapel is enclosed by a low rubble forecourt wall that surrounds the burial ground, which contains numerous headstones. It is noted for being an unusually attractive, small-scale chapel set in a rural context.
